Choosing the Right Materials for Apartment Signage… Built to Last
Apartment signage works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It creates the first impression for prospects, reinforces your brand for residents, and quietly communicates how well your community is maintained. Unfortunately, Mother Nature can be a relentless critic. Sun, rain, hail, high winds, ice, humidity, and extreme temperatures slowly wear down even the best-looking signs. When signage begins to fade, crack, or peel, prospects may assume management isn’t keeping up with the property.
At Robinson Creative, selecting the right material is just as important as creating a beautiful design. Our goal is to recommend solutions that maximize durability without exceeding your budget.
Digitally printed signage has become increasingly popular because of its affordability. However, without a UV laminate, colors often begin fading within two to three years. We recommend using UV inks combined with a UV protective laminate, extending the life of exterior graphics to approximately five to seven years.

For maximum longevity, our preferred solution is often high-pressure laminate (HPL). It can maintain its appearance for up to ten years, resists fading, and features a durable graffiti-resistant surface that stands up to everyday abuse.
Be cautious when using vinyl on pedestrian-accessible signs. Even premium vinyl can become a target for curious hands. We jokingly call it the “Alphabet Soup” effect… when peeled letters mysteriously become new words you’d never approve.

Painted aluminum and acrylic should always receive a UV protective coating or sealant. When budgets allow, powder coating is the superior choice for posts and metal components because the baked-on finish dramatically outperforms conventional paint.
We also avoid combining dissimilar exterior materials whenever possible. Acrylic and aluminum, for example, expand and contract at different rates during seasonal temperature changes, eventually causing fasteners to loosen or panels to separate.

Interior signage has fewer environmental challenges, but material selection still matters. Acrylic and aluminum remain excellent choices, while laminated digital graphics provide an economical, attractive solution that resists scratching. We generally avoid interior vinyl because it’s simply too easy to peel over time.
The right materials protect your investment, preserve your brand, and extend the life of your signage. If you’re unsure which materials are best for your community, we’d be happy to help. Together, we’ll recommend solutions that are durable, attractive, budget-conscious, and perfectly suited to the personality of your development.
